Abstract
The fire history dataset is a historical record of mapped bushfires that have occurred throughout Tasmania. It forms a critical input into the evaluation of bushfire risk and potential throughout the state. Analysis of past fires assists authorities during prevention, mitigation and suppression of bushfires. The fire history dataset is comprised of two feature classes: 'Fire History' and 'Fire History - Last Impacted'. The fire history records from individual agencies are appended each year into the 'Fire History' feature class. 'Fire History' is a cumulative history layer with overlapping areas where multiple fires have impacted a single region. The 'Fire History - Last Impacted' feature class is derived from 'Fire History' and identifies the latest fire having occurred at any location across the state. The 'Fire History - Last Impacted' feature class does not contain any overlaps.

Lineage Statement
All Fires is complied from individual agency fire records. Records are validated against ES-GIS incident data where required. Data is primarily sourced from Tasmania Fire Service, Parks and Wildlife Service and Sustainable Timber Tasmania (formerly known as Forestry Tasmania). Data provided by other organisations, such as local councils and private land-holders, is included where available. For the period 2012-2023 analysis of satellite imagery has been undertaken by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE) to provide additional coverage and verification of mapped fire boundaries. Fire History also incorporates records derived from - Johnson KJ and Marsden-Smedley JB 2001. Fire history of the northern part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and its associated regions. Papers and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Tasmania 136:145-152 - Marsden-Smedley JB 1998. Changes in the fire regime of southwest Tasmania over the last 200 years. Papers and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Tasmania 132: 15-29. All individual agency bushfire records are integrated into a single dataset called 'Fire History' which contains all historical bushfire records. A combination of FME workbench models and manual editing tasks are required to maintain the Fire History and Last Impacted datasets.
Lineage Description
Position Accuracy: Positional accuracy varies for each fire record as data has been captured using a variety of methods by numerous organisations. Methods of mapping bushfires include using GPS (hand-held or by aircraft), sketches on charts and maps, satellite and airborne imagery and other historical records. Attribute Accuracy: Validation checks are performed to ensure attribution is logical and conforms to the data schema. Unknown or null values are used where a value has not been captured or provided by the original agency. The ignition date attribute is mandatory. For some older records only a month or year was captured. In these cases the ignition date has been set to 1st of January, or 1st day of the known month. Additional validation checks are performed between records to ensure multiple fires do not overlap within 5 days. Logical Consistency: As part of the dataset compilation and upload process topological checks and fixes are performed, such as repairing self-intersecting geometries and removal of duplicate nodes. Detection and removal of slivers is also undertaken to improve the quality of the Last Impacted dataset. Completeness: Work on the Fire History dataset is ongoing, and the dataset is updated annually to include the last fire season. This includes mapped fires within Tasmania attended by the contributing agencies. These records are supplemented and improved by analysis of satellite imagery. Satellite imagery provides coverage for fires of significant size not attended or mapped by the contributing agencies, such as private fuel reduction burns or fires in remote and inaccessible terrain. No analysis of satellite imagery has been undertaken prior to 2012. Additional historical records are added as part of any back-capture process undertaken by the contributing agencies.
