The CFEV Estuaries data layer shows a statewide coverage of estuaries in Tasmania. Individual features (estuaries) are rated according to their overall conservation value (relative to other estuaries), as assessed by the Conservation of Freshwater Ecosystem Values (CFEV) Program. The data also includes an assessment of condition and conservation management priority for each estuary.

The CFEV Estuaries spatial data layer was developed using the LIST 1:25,000 Hydrographic theme. As the CFEV classification and condition assessment for estuaries was based on the work undertaken by Edgar et al. (1999a), initially only the estuaries from that study were selected. Two extra estuaries, Dianas Basin and Wrinklers Lagoon, were also added to the layer, as a result of special value important bird sites occurring in these areas. The polygon for the Huon River was modified slightly to more accurately reflect the site assessed by Edgar et al. (1999a). Individual features (estuaries) within the CFEV Estuaries data layer have been assessed using the CFEV assessment framework. This included a classification, condition assessment and rankings of conservation value and conservation management priority. Currency: The results of the CFEV assessment were completed and released in 2005. Completeness: The CFEV Estuaries data set is complete for all Tasmania excluding Macquarie Island.
