Abstract |
The CFEV Wetlands data layer shows a statewide coverage of wetlands in Tasmania. Individual features (wetlands, marshes) are rated according to their overall conservation value (relative to other wetlands), as assessed by the Conservation of Freshwater Ecosystem Values (CFEV) Program. The data also includes an assessment of condition and conservation management priority for each wetland feature. |
Lineage Description |
Development of the wetland spatial data layer used the 1: 25,000 LIST Hydrographic Area data layer (subsets: wetland swamp area and wet areas) in conjunction with the TASVEG data layer (Version 0.1, 2003).
Wetland vegetation codes (As, CA, ALK, Br, BPB, BF, L, ME, Sm, Pr, Ps, Waf, Was, We, Ws) were selected from the TASVEG data layer (DPIW, 2003). Wetlands from the LIST Hydrographic Area data layer were initially classified as â¿¿undifferentiated Weâ¿¿ and combined with the selected TASVEG polygons using the rules outlined in the CFEV Project Technical Report (http://dpipwe.tas.gov.au/water/water-monitoring-and-assessment/cfev-program/cfev-resources#TheCFEVTechnicalReport). Where there was significant overlap, TASVEG polygons were given preference. After the merge of the two data layers, the wetlands were classified as:
1. undifferentiated (LIST â¿¿undifferentiated Weâ¿¿ + TASVEG â¿¿We (generic)â¿¿)
2. differentiated (all other polygons)
Wetland polygons that shared boundaries or overlapped were dissolved to form one polygon. A dominant TASVEG type was assigned to the dissolved polygon (specific details are given in the CFEV Technical Report).
Individual features (wetlands and marshes) within the CFEV Wetlands data layer have been assessed using the CFEV assessment framework. This included a classification, condition assessment and rankings of conservation value and conservation management priority. Details of the framework can be found on the CFEV Program website (http://dpipwe.tas.gov.au/water/water-monitoring-and-assessment/cfev-program/about-the-cfev-project) and in the CFEV Project Technical Report.
Limitations:
Wetlands <0.5 ha that could not be assigned with an appropriate wetland vegetation type were deleted from the data set. The CFEV Wetands data layer inherits the mapping limitations of the TASVEG (Version 0.1) data set.
Currency:
The results of the CFEV assessment were completed and released in 2005.
Completeness:
The CFEV Wetlands data set is complete for all Tasmania excluding Macquarie Island. |
