Abstract |
This dataset is a daily raster of 3-day forecast heat- and cold-wave forecast for the state of Tasmania, based on the EHF (Extreme Heat Factor) calculation (Nairn & Fawcett 2009). The data is updated daily at 12:00 noon and displays forecast heatwave conditions for the following three days in seven categories (severe, extreme and normal cold wave, no warning, and severe, extreme and normal heat wave).

Lineage Description |
Past climate data, consisting of average maximum and minimum temperatures and daily maximum and minimum temperatures over the last 30 days, are retrieved daily from the Bureau of Meteorology AWAP grids product. Numerical forecast maximum and minimum temperature data for the next three days are obtains for each available meteorological station across Australia are obtained as the Bureau of Meteorology’s IDY02123 product. A kriging model is used to interpolate the three day forecast to a raster, using elevation derived from the NASA SRTM 30m DEM as a covariate. The Nairn & Fawcett (2013) formula is then used to calculate the heat wave index relative to a previously calculated threshold surface.
