About the LIST

The Land Information System Tasmania (the LIST) is a whole of government integrated land information infrastructure with a web based delivery system. The LIST is a showcase of what can be achieved through cooperation, leadership, smart technology and smart thinking.

The LIST is governed by the Land Information Coordination Committee (LICC) and run on a day to day basis by the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment.

The LICC is made up of representatives from State Government, Local Government and Government Business Enterprises with an interest in land information.

The committee has the responsibility for developing policies and strategies that ensure appropriate data quality and services are available to the Tasmanian community. It also oversees and ensures that the LIST operates within the Tasmanian government’s land information policies.

The LICC performs this role by providing a policy framework that coordinates the collection, collation, display and access to land information from the State and Government, Local Government and Government Business Enterprises.

LIST data

The LIST’s data can be divided, in broad terms, into two distinct areas. The first area of information includes the on-line access to live and scanned documents and information held by the Land Titles Office. This service is available to members of the public and subscribers. Subscribers to this service, typically real estate agents and solicitors, have the capacity to electronically lodge priority notices.

The second area is spatial information and includes information about topographical data, natural resource data, roads and community facilities, cadastre (property boundaries), images including aerial photo flight lines, administrative boundaries, area information, survey control points and nomenclature. All of this information is freely available through a web browser and additional information is being added based on client demand and data availability.

The LIST - Technical Information

The LIST is supported by computer systems managed by the Information and Land Services Division of the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment, on behalf of the Land Information Coordination Committee.

These systems have recently moved to a software environment that is compatible with recent standards developed through the Open GIS Consortium. This will enable The LIST infrastructure to be readily accessible to a wide range of users whether it be an integral part of their corporate systems or providing the answer to a simple enquiry about a piece of land.

The vector and text data is stored in an Oracle 8i database, with spatial elements accessed through ESRI's Spatial Database Engine. Georeferenced images are stored in ECW format and delivered in .jpg format. Exposure software, developed in Tasmania by Geometry Pty Ltd, supports the presentation of both vector and raster data through an easy to use Internet mapping interface.

Land title, property and nomenclature information, stored and managed in an Oracle database, is fully integrated with other elements of the system to enable two way access. Searches can be performed using any combination of key identifiers including title reference, property number, owners name, property address or feature name. The user can then optionally choose to view the results in a map form. Alternatively, direct access to the mapping interface provides options to view title and property details.
